Objective
Students will discover the damage pollution has to our water and the challenge of cleaning it up. They will create a Public Service Announcement video using the knowledge acquired by the Tryscience website and their research to encourage others to keep our water pollution free.
Science Standards: (List as applicable)
The Living Environment
6.1f When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce, and others die or move to new locations.
7.1c Humans, as individuals or communities, change environments in ways that can be either helpful or harmful for themselves and other organisms.
Description/What to do in the classroom
1.Students will research water pollution and its effects on the environment
2.Determine what types of animals would be affected by water pollution and create a chart
3.Investigate the Tryscience.org experiments
4.Develop action steps that they can take to help insure clean water
5.Create a Public Service Announcement video educating others about the harmful effects of pollution and ways we can take care of the water around us
Things to consider/science behind it
Things to consider-
How little of Earth's water is drinkable
The harmful longterm effects of water pollution on us and future generations
The challenge in cleaning up water pollution
Our responsibility to ensure proper care of the Earth and the animals on it
Curriculum topics
Human decisions and activities have had a profound impact on the physical and living environment
Integration of TryScience.org features
Oil Spill- students will discover which materials will best clean up an oil spill. They will also place a feather in the oil to recognize how difficult it would be for aquatic birds to "come clean"
Turbidity- students will measure the amount of sediment suspended in water and learn how it affects aquatic life
-add glitter and food coloring to try to remove other types of pollution
-discuss what happens when all settles and the controversy surrounding dredging
A-mazing Robots- Students will complete the online activity to simulate a futuristic way to clean up harmful pollution
